The 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow was the last old-school Mercedes. Today I'm reviewing this SL500 and I'm showing you all around this great example of the R129 Mercedes SL. Then I'm driving this 2002 SL500 to show you what it's like to get it out on the road.

The best looking and rarest Silver Arrow is one with the Panoramic hard top (at $25,000 how many out of the 1,500 made have a pano? Almost Unicorn Status ) I have a Silver Arrow for sale with a pano and 30,000 miles if anyone is interested. Here's what they look like with a Pano: cdn1.mecum.com/auctions/da0914/da0914-192759/images/da0914-192759_2@2x.jpg . Silver Arrows are the only ones with polished aluminum trim around the windows. So forget about dropping on a pano from a regular Sl500. As for handling, all you need is a set of the new Michelin pilot sport 4s tires. Totally transforms the car. Talk about grip! The car corners like the tires have glue on them.

For someone who reviews cars you don't really know much. The roll bar shoots up automatically when the car detects a roll. Back seats were available as an option.

How is the sl500 compared to the v6 in term of reliability and simplicity, considering importing one it looks neat for a weekend drive maximum 200 miles a month

By 2000 these things were horrribly dated. The aluminum trim just looked tacked on to me. Having driven a few of these they dont feel sporty (to me at least )but they do feel bank vault solid. SL was special back in the day, no longer the case

The Roll bar goes up automatically in case of a roll over. There are sensores in the rear control arms, if the car lifts from the ground it Deploys and you have to go through a sequence to reset it. Mine had a damaged sensor so it went up always

about the smog detector it´s in case that you drive through a city with high levels of monoxid carbone it warns you so you can close the top and and exaust the air inside, it as filters, but today in europe it´s rare to happen but in the 80´s was comon to happen in some big cities

  • Rui Cameira
    Rui Cameira

so stupid the protection that was talked in the 80´s is what conects the headrest to the seat ,the other is just for american standarts in europe they didn´t had the 60´s rollbar, and where i live during the day you roast driving without top so every sl i owned just took the top a few days in summer at night ,i live in portugal, and when it came out was very forward car in the 80´s not the 90´s as he says the car his so bad that was sold for more than 20 years ,i saw one in perfect shape with a engine problem that could be fixed being sold for 5 cent´s and it was the top of the line ,the car looked perfect, but it was old 87 one,and before this model came out there was a AMG version of the 500SEC with 6.3L V12 and he says by this time amg didn´t change that much cars AMG stands for the name of 2 mercedes engeniers that were resposable to create a SE from the 60´s the fastest car in the world, how dumb this iliterated guy can be, dougscore?oh,no cup older , the interior that was unique in the world he gives 3 from 10 ,to give a 10 the car must drive to the moon by his standarts and he talks like it´s a 2002 car but as i said it´s an mid 80´s car and there was an AMG version of it in the 80´s the V12 6,3L, so dumb ,is this what in the U.S. you call trailor park trash.it looks like he´s one, regards

  • Rui Cameira
    Rui Cameira

a friend of mine in late 80´s took a flight out of the highway at 180km/h and roll several times but only broke a bone next to his arm ,mercedes engeniers bought the car to study in germany because they didn´t expect to be so safe in any other car ,with no top he would have died because of only one pilar to the head rest , this doug talks in another video about the new sl and says after the slr and the gullwing that he didn´t remenber the name they do this to the sl ,well he does not know that the sl r is an sl as the mclaren mercedes is also a sl but he´s so dumb that he thinks it´s another model ,the sl500 is like the slr but with less power and no top, this guy don´t have a clue about cars

Did the dash crap out? Did the window lifts fail? Does the transmission smoke when driving over 70 mph? Two good things. The paint is amazing. When it ran, it drove very well for a big chassis.

  • Buzz Pedrotti
    Buzz Pedrotti

Completely dispute the assertion that 90s Mercedes S were designed for durability. They are crap. Do not buy an old one. You will soon hate it, and will want revenge on a random German.

  • Buzz Pedrotti
    Buzz Pedrotti

I'll dispute the performance assertion. Jump on a 2015 sl500 at 70., you will be at over 100 mph before you complete passing the car in front of you.

If it says smog, maybe it’s suggesting you put the top up and turn or the AC so that the cabin filter(s) can scrub the air that you’re breathing. Duh!

Silver arrow was the name of the Formula 1 car in the 50's...the car eas made of aluminun without painting (silver) and it was tge fastest car on track (it wan an arrow). J. M. Fangio won a F1 champioship in one of these cars
